He said, she said, by Britta Benson

I’m experimenting with poetry every day, something I can only recommend as your daily pick-me-up. Far healthier than anything else on the market and also completely free. Right now, I’m fascinated with writing little stories in the shape of poems. Here’s a classic: he said, she said, but with my twist.

He said, she said

He took cover in the nimble shadows

of his apologies and attended to her

sweetly. The knots in her stomach

kept an accurate score. Life happened

in another league, while they were jostling,

sidestepping, distracted. One day,

he bought a picture of happiness for her

to scrutinize. He hung the golden frame

on the wall to replace a broken mirror.

‘For you’, he said. ‘Indeed’, she said,

relieved while teetering on the spike

in his heart so elegantly, it was quite the

honour to watch herself bleed to death.
