I got inspired by a big black rock today, Sgeir Mhor in Portree Bay. Protected by the sea at high tide, and yet you can reach it within a few steps when the tide is low. An interesting change of perspective.
Sgeir Mhor
To the left of Portree Bay,
just metres from the headland,
lies Sgeir Mhor, the Black Rock,
a proud and barnacled bolder,
pockmarked by centuries
and protected by the sea
from unwanted intrusions
half of the time.
I walked there at low tide
and didn’t even get my feet wet.
As I stood on Sgeir Mhor
I wished I could reach
the black rocks in my heart
just as easily,
in a few well balanced steps,
at the right moment,
light in foot and soul,
enjoying the views of the colourful bay.
The harbour looks far more interesting
from the outside in.
I wish I could say the same
for my heart.
