Heard, by Britta Benson

I wrote this poem today, in response to Sammi Cox’s Weekend Writing Prompt Number 261, ‘Outcry’ in 65 words. Here’s the link to the prompt post: https://sammiscribbles.wordpress.com/2022/05/28/weekend-writing-prompt-261-outcry/

Heard

The loudest outcry hardly ever breaks

a wall of tense, communal silence,

such a sacred shrine of misconception.

This contagious swell,

this ancient greed of sound

cancels out

all weakened echoes

of who you could become.

A whisper,

a shame,

not the same.

Please,

leave gaps

in your concrete facades,

just in case your softest voice

needs to cause tremors

and bring your world down.

  1. Lovely poem, Britta. As I read the last few lines, the Leonard Cohen song, “Anthem” came to mind, particularly the stanza lines,

‘Ring the bells that still can ring
    Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in’

    Well done.

    1. Thank you so much for reading and commenting, Bill. I love that Leonard Cohen song, especially those lines, ‘there’s a crack, a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in’.
