I wrote this poem today, in response to Sammi Cox’s Weekend Writing Prompt Number 261, ‘Outcry’ in 65 words. Here’s the link to the prompt post: https://sammiscribbles.wordpress.com/2022/05/28/weekend-writing-prompt-261-outcry/
Heard
The loudest outcry hardly ever breaks
a wall of tense, communal silence,
such a sacred shrine of misconception.
This contagious swell,
this ancient greed of sound
cancels out
all weakened echoes
of who you could become.
A whisper,
a shame,
not the same.
Please,
leave gaps
in your concrete facades,
just in case your softest voice
needs to cause tremors
and bring your world down.
Maybe it’s the communal silence that is slowly destroying us? Have we lost the ability to communicate and compromise (and love) our neighbors? A thought-provoking poem with a beautiful suggestion at the end.

Your softest voice causes tremors whether it needs to, or not!

‘communal silence’ – a difficult thing to fight indeed. Love your message here, Britta.

Lovely poem, Britta. As I read the last few lines, the Leonard Cohen song, “Anthem” came to mind, particularly the stanza lines,
‘Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in’
Well done.
