I follow the Naturalist Weekly and love learning about the micro seasons (https://naturalistweekly.com/2022/11/18/micro-season-the-daffodil-flowers-2022/)
We are currently in the micro season of daffodil flowers. At first, that sounded quite bizarre to me. It’s past mid November. Certainly no daffodils here in Scotland. Then, of course, I realized, that that wasn’t strictly true.
Here’s my haibun about the micro season of daffodil flowers. Enjoy!
Preparation
Towards the end of November, Daffodil flower seem just a very distant thought. Still, we, gardeners and poets alike, never tire from planting brown, oddly shaped bulbs into our soil, deep into our soul, in the ridiculous, stubbornly optimistic hope that one day, the magnificent will rise.
Held, Narcissus sleeps
in the dark of winter’s dream.
Beauty, curious.
I started off badly by misreading naturalist and thinking you were baring your soul (or something)! Having, this year, planted lots of daffodils in single pots, ready for filling in gaps later, I can vouch for the fact that they are, indeed, well into their season.

I’m a big fan of daffodils, of all the spring bulbs. Much needed dashes of colour early in the year. It always feels like a miracle, watching these not exactly pretty bulbs transform into bright flowers.

Hi Britta, I so appreciate your ability to connect to the season through the planting of bulbs! This is a wonderful example of how these seasons, although they might not directly align with our regional experience, can provide us with opportunities to find connections! Thanks so much for writing and sharing!
