This poem is my response to Brian Vos’s Weekly Poetry Prompt. The theme this week: Back to basics. Here’s the link to Brian’s blog: https://brianvos.com/2022/05/13/back-to-basics-your-weekly-poetry-prompt/
And here’s what I made of it:
Back to basics
The list used to be long.
This, that, and the next thing,
all essentials on the shopping list of life,
the ingredients for my conditional happiness,
such a temporary, transactional bliss,
dependent on stuff, never enough.
Now, there is no need for lists,
but if you really insist,
I’ll give you this:
When I look out into my garden,
I see goldfinches, blue tits and robins,
I’m surrounded by song and spiders,
a butterfly world of abundance
that brings me great joy.
This is beautiful. Your perfect opening line led to some great nuggets like ingredients of conditional happiness. I think we all have a different idea of what the essentials really are these days.

The line about “conditional happiness” is very true. Sometimes this wisdom is hard to live out.

So true, Jenna. We know so many things and still don’t act upon that knowledge. There is always a much, much easier way: Doing nothing.
